What is Aquaponics?
Aquaponics is the combination of Aqua-culture(fish farming), and growing plants with water
and nutrients (Hydroponics). Aquaponics is the
most natural, cost effective and efficient system available for growing food crops and Red Claws. It successfully recreates the systems found in nature.
The practice of Aquaponic farming is not a new technology, it has been used at least since the time of the Aztecs. Recently however it has been re-gaining popularity. The system works by using a type of fresh water Species (Red Claw) that are bred in a water tank, then our plants are grown on our stackable pots.
The Red Claws produce waste in the water, and through natural bacterial processes, fertilize the plants, which in turn clean the water for the Red Claw. The process continues indefinitely and is completely natural and sustainable for both the red claw and the plants.
The attraction of our system is that it can provide affordable, natural, nutritious food, free of pesticides and other toxins.
The combination of aquaculture and hydroponics results in a completely natural organic mini ecosystem. The vegetables are grown in a soil-free hydroponic system. In which allows more control over harmful variables.
The reservoir in our aquaponics system contains Red Claw and water rather than the nutrient solution used in hydroponics and the water is pumped from our pond into our redclaw tank to our holding tanks and then to our plants. Beneficial bacteria colonise grow in our holding tanks and it performs the role of a bio filter.
The vegetables growing in the our pots consume the nitrates that are produced by the beneficial bacteria and complete the cycle of cleaning the water.
The only water losses will be from evaporation or the transpiration of the plants and no chemicals are used. (Any chemicals used may harm the red claws, and unbalance the system)
